Adam Peaty is facing fresh family tensions after deciding to compete under the surname Ramsay-Peaty at this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 31-year-old married Holly Ramsay, daughter of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, in a high-profile ceremony at Bath Abbey in December.

Peaty has since adopted the double-barrelled surname Ramsay-Peaty, with the updated name set to appear on official start lists when he returns to major championship action later this summer.

According to reports, the move has sparked anger among members of his estranged family, who are said to feel deeply hurt by the decision.

A source quoted by the Daily Mail claimed some relatives believe Peaty is benefiting from the prominence of the Ramsay name and have accused him of distancing himself from his roots.

They said: “As much as Adam wants to be a Ramsay, he is not. He is a Peaty.

“Adam has financial control and is cashing in on the Ramsay name because it opens doors.

“He is playing a role.”

They added: “Adam may be rich but we have something that he hasn’t and that is brains, loyalty, integrity and family.

“Money makes for a cold bedfellow. It can’t hold you tight when things go wrong or when you have a bad day.

“When you live to be famous you aren’t living, you are playing a role. Fame is but fleeting but family is forever.”

Peaty has not publicly commented on the latest claims.

The three-time Olympic champion is currently preparing for a landmark appearance at the Commonwealth Games, where he is aiming to become the first British swimmer to win gold medals at four consecutive editions of the event.

His international journey began in Glasgow in 2014, and he has gone on to collect four Commonwealth titles and three silver medals.

Peaty secured his place in Team England by winning the 100 metres breaststroke at the Aquatics GB Championships in April.

He is the oldest member of England’s 42-strong swimming squad.

“Being selected to represent your country is always an honour, and there is something special about a home Commonwealth Games,” Peaty said after his selection was confirmed.

“The event also marks a significant milestone in my international career, which began in Glasgow 12 years ago at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“I’m particularly excited to compete in Glasgow this summer as I know everyone will come together to make it a brilliant occasion.”

The Commonwealth Games will be Peaty’s first major event since his marriage to Holly.

The couple have become one of British sport’s most high-profile partnerships, with Peaty frequently speaking about the support he receives from both his wife and her family.

Gordon has also publicly backed his son-in-law, while Peaty’s mother is said to be ‘devastated’ after she was banned from the wedding in December.
