James Peaty, the 34-year-old brother of Olympic swimming champion Adam Peaty, is believed to have been detained at his Uttoxeter residence on Monday following allegations of harassment.
The arrest relates to purported threats made whilst the athlete was celebrating his stag party in Budapest.
The incident prompted authorities to provide a police escort for the three-time Olympic gold medallist upon his arrival at Manchester Airport on Sunday.
Staffordshire Police confirmed to The Sun they had arrested a man from the Uttoxeter area on November 11 on suspicion of harassment, releasing him on conditional bail whilst investigations continue.
The arrest marks a dramatic escalation in tensions within the Peaty family ahead of swimmer Mr Peaty’s December wedding to Holly Ramsay, daughter of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.
The arrest occurs against a backdrop of escalating family tensions that have seen Adam’s mother Caroline excluded from both the wedding ceremony and Holly’s recent hen party at Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire.
The 59-year-old nursery manager was reportedly left at home caring for Adam’s five-year-old son George whilst celebrations took place with guests including Victoria Beckham and Tana Ramsay.
Family members claim the Peatys have been marginalised since the engagement announcement.
Sources suggest the swimmer has grown distant from his working-class origins following his relationship with the celebrity chef’s family.
Caroline’s sister Louise Williams publicly condemned the treatment, stating that Holly had “inflicted a hurt on my sister that will take a very long time to heal if ever.”
The brothers’ relationship deteriorated significantly after Adam discussed James’s “demons” and past substance abuse issues in his 2021 autobiography, The Gladiator Mindset.
Family sources indicate James felt misrepresented as “a bum” in the publication, with locals subsequently questioning him about the revelations.
Their communication ceased in June during a construction project James was undertaking for his younger brother.
Despite initially being selected as a groomsman, James was subsequently excluded from the Budapest stag celebrations.
Personal tragedies have compounded James’s difficulties, with his wife Charlotte experiencing a miscarriage in August last year and another in recent weeks. Family sources emphasise these losses have severely affected his mental wellbeing.
The 34-year-old’s father Mark acknowledged his son’s “genuine mental health difficulties” whilst noting the brothers’ typically close relationship had “got out of hand.”
Mark Peaty expressed concern about the deteriorating relationship between his sons, acknowledging that whilst sibling disputes are commonplace, the current situation had spiralled beyond normal boundaries.
“They’re brothers. They’ve always been close but like any normal family, brothers fight, argue, fall out, make-up and start all over again,” he told The Sun.
Sources close to James maintain he poses no threat to his Olympic champion brother, dismissing the necessity of airport security measures.
They highlighted that James lacks driving capabilities, questioning how he could have reached the airport.
Meanwhile, sources near the engaged couple suggest Adam views his mother as complicit in enabling James’s behaviour rather than encouraging him to address his issues.
Gordon Ramsay has reportedly provided substantial support to the couple, drawing from his own experiences with his brother Ronnie’s 2007 heroin-related imprisonment in Indonesia.
