Alanis Morissette has revealed that she now identifies as pansexual during a discussion about her sexuality on a recent podcast.
The 52-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter made the disclosure during the November 3 episode of the Handsome podcast, co-hosted by comedians Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin.
The moment came near the end of the conversation, after Feimster commented on the emotional turmoil and heartache that inspired Morissette’s most celebrated tracks.
“I’m sorry for the men that hurt you, but I’m not sorry for the songs that came from it,” the podcast host said, before asking whether those experiences had ever made her “want to be a lesbian.”
“I’m pansexual, so yeah,” Morissette responded. “I get everything.”
“Wait, you’re not really pansexual, are you?” A visibly surprised Notaro asked, which prompted the seven-time Grammy winner to simply reply: “I am.”
Martin then chimed in enthusiastically: “Me too!”
Notaro jested that Morissette ought to have opened the podcast with such a significant piece of news. “You’re supposed to come into the Handsome podcast leading with, ‘I’m pansexual,'” she said.
The Jagged Little Pill singer quipped in response: “You know, I like to leave it for the epilogue.
“I like to confuse people on the way out. Is it confusing?”
Pansexuality is said to describe a romantic, sexual or emotional attraction to others irrespective of their gender identity or sex.
The prefix “pan” translates as “all”. It’s not the same as bisexuality as that refers to attraction to more than one gender but not necessarily all. Gender is a notable factor in bisexual attraction, whereas for pansexual individuals it does not.
Morissette has been married to rapper and musician Mario “Souleye” Treadway since May 2010. Together, they are parents to three children: sons Ever, 14, and Winter, seven, and daughter Onyx, 10.
Before settling down with Treadway, the singer had several well-known relationships, including with Full House star Dave Coulier between 1992 and 1994.
The actor is widely believed to have inspired her breakthrough hit You Oughta Know, though Morissette has never confirmed this.
She was subsequently in a relationship with actor Dash Mihok from 1998 to 2001, before a high-profile romance with Ryan Reynolds that lasted from 2002 to 2007.
The pair became engaged in 2004 but ultimately parted ways.
