The International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln has held a special service this week to teach school children about the importance of remembrance.

Pupils from schools from across the county of Lincolnshire attended the event on Thursday ahead of official commemorations this Sunday.

Ahead of the day, the children involved had written poems, of which three winning ones were read out at the service, before everyone observed a minute’s silence at 11:00 and displayed their wreath in front of the centre’s Spire Memorial.

Janine Smithson, Learning Officer at the IBCC says the service aims to teach children about recognising the service of our armed forces personnel, from Bomber Command to present day.

She told GB News: “As a centre, it’s our responsibility to educate not just the children, but the teachers and their families about the history of Bomber Command.

“The Second World War now over 80 years ago, and the further we get away from it, the further we have that connection that is lost, and that’s why it’s so important.

“I’ve often found that Lincolnshire history, specifically Bomber Command and the amount of airfields that are here, has a warm part in the hearts of everybody in this county.

“It is very important to see children that they are engaged and they enjoy their experience visiting here.”

Sitting 102ft high, the wingspan of the AVRO Lancaster, the Spire Memorial sits at the heart of the site which serves as a point for recognition, remembrance and reconciliation for Bomber Command.

On the surrounding walls, almost 58,000 names remember the men and women who died serving or supporting that effort.

After the service, the children were tasked with finding someone who is commemorated on the wall, before placing a poppy next to their name.

9-year-olds, Jacob and Ella, explained to GB News what they’ve learnt about the act of remembrance.

Jacob said: “If we didn’t, we probably wouldn’t be here, and we should be thankful of them because they they chose to serve for our country.”

Ella added: “To represent the people that have fought in their lives to help us.”
