A 12-year-old schoolgirl has died after being hit by a double-decker bus in Scotland.
The pupil was struck by the vehicle on Lauchlan Way in Kilwinning, near the Ayrshire College campus.
It is understood that the young girl was involved in the tragic incident during the school’s lunch break.
The road was completely closed following the collision, with emergency crews and a specialist ambulance team called to the scene.
Despite the crew’s efforts, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement, a Police Scotland spokesman confirmed: “Around 1.10pm, on Tuesday, 3 November, 2026, we received a report of a crash involving a 12-year-old female pedestrian and a bus on Lauchlan Way.
“Emergency services attended, but the 12-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family is aware.
“There were no reports of any other injuries and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman added: “We received a call at 13:08 to attend an incident on Lauchlan Way, Kilwinning.
“Two ambulances, two special operations response teams (SORT) and a critical care team were dispatched to the scene.”
Police were quick to shut down the road and surrounding area, installing blue police screens at the scene.
Vehicles and tape were also used to block off the road to pedestrians and other vehicles.
A tow truck was then called in to remove the bus involved in the crash.
Kilwinning Councillor Joe Cullinane said in a statement: “Clearly, it’s a tragic incident and all of our thoughts are with the family and friends.”
Police Scotland Sergeant Stewart Taylor has appealed for any information following the incident.
He said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the girl who died at what is an extremely difficult time for them.
“We would ask that anyone with any information contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 1484 of Tuesday, 3 November, 2026.”
A Kilwinning resident told The Sun: “It’s literally your worst nightmare come true as a parent.
“You just can’t imagine getting that call. As a community we are in shock. It will take a lot to get over this.”
A North Ayrshire Council spokesman said: “We are aware of a serious road accident in Kilwinning, and we are working with Police Scotland.”
