King Charles III has said the slave trade was a “shameful chapter of history” that “fills my heart with horror”, in a speech to Commonwealth leaders.

The UK monarch’s comments came as he was formally opening the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm) in Antigua and Barbuda.

“We cannot change the actions of those who came before us. We can, however, learn from the past,” the King said.

The Chogm summit is held every two years and allows leaders and representatives of the 56 Commonwealth nations to discuss the future of the partnership.
