Drivers have been warned of hazardous conditions across Britain after the Met Office issued a severe weather alert for fog.

The warning stretches across most of England, from the Midlands, to the East of England, London and the South East, as well as across the North West, South West and Yorkshire.

Fog will also cover parts of Wales, including areas around Denbighshire, Monmouthshire, Powys, Torfaen and Wrexham.

The poor conditions are due to persist across swathes of the UK on Sunday morning before it lifts fully, causing some delays on public transport.

In some patches of the UK, visibility will drop to fewer than 100 metres, leaving hazardous conditions on the roads for motorists.

The Met Office said the fog will clear in some areas, while northern areas will witness cloudy and pathy rain or drizzle throughout Sunday before the weather moves south.

Across the remainder of the country, conditions will be mainly dry with sunny spells, with several showers in the far north.

Tonight, patchy rain in the south will clear while clear spells and a few coastal showers take place in the north and east, the forecaster predicted.

Another colder night will be on the horizon with frost to come in overnight in the north.

A ridge of high pressure has been strengthening and will take firm control of Britain’s weather over the coming days.

This marks a dramatic shift from last week, when a succession of storms driven by a vigorous Atlantic jet stream battered parts of the country.

Although the jet stream continues to track near the UK, the expanding high pressure system is ushering in far calmer conditions..

On Monday, early mist and fog will blanket parts of the country before sunshine and dry spells take over.

Rain showers will be scattered across the country, affecting northern, eastern and southeastern areas, heaviest in the far southeast.

Temperatures are expected to remain broadly in line with the seasonal average, much as they have been in recent days.

After Storm Boelo and Storm Austen battered the nation last week, Britain is entering an extended spell of predominantly dry weather.

Some rainfall is due across occasional patches of low cloud and drizzle linked to morning mist and fog.

With no storms anticipated in the foreseeable future, the next named storm — Chloe — appears unlikely to materialise any time soon.

This prolonged absence of meaningful precipitation is set to intensify worries about the drought and dwindling reservoir levels across England.

According to the Environment Agency, rainfall exceeding the average by 20 per cent over the next half-year is required to bring the drought to an end.
