The Prime Minister has backed a bid for the Olympics and Paralympics to be hosted in the North of England, with a major cash injection to be announced in next week’s Budget.
The Government has set aside £7million to explore a potential bid to host the Games in the 2040s, it has been reported.
In May, while Andy Burnham was Mayor of Manchester, UK Sport conducted an initial assessment commissioned by the Government to assess the cost and potential benefits of hosting an Olympics solely in the North of England.
Chancellor John Healey is now anticipated to announce the investment in a full feasibility study for a “Northern Games”, with Mr Burnham vowing to put on the “greatest show on Earth”.
“Few things bring a country together quite like the Olympics,” the Prime Minister told the BBC.
“I want people to feel that sense of excitement again, and to experience it in their own towns and communities, not just watch it on the telly.
“The Games would unlock opportunity across our towns and cities for the whole country.
“From north to south, it would be something everyone could get behind and be proud of.
“We know we can put on the greatest show on earth. Now we want to explore how we can do it again, with the whole country behind it.”
The full feasibility report will consider venues, transport links and whether the bid could realistically win.
It will also assess the potential impact on the economy. The 2012 London Olympics resulted in a sharp £9.9billion boost, according to a 2013 report by the UK Trade and Investment.
It is also estimated to have cost around £8.9billion.
Following the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the French economy grew by 0.4 per cent in the July-September quarter, according to Insee, France’s National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies.
The feasibility report will be conducted by the government, UK Sport, the northern mayors and the British Olympic and Paralympic Associations.
Mr Healey said: “Olympic legacy lasts way beyond the celebration of sport over the summer. The North hosting an event as big as this would be truly unforgettable.
“Britain’s experience of London 2012 is proof we can host the world. I’m picking up the pace on our work to potentially bid for these prestigious games.
“It will lift communities, create opportunities and give the UK a huge boost.”
