The Princess of Wales spent close to an hour at The Treehouse hospice in Ipswich on Thursday, meeting young people with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Catherine, who serves as patron of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), first opened the Suffolk facility back in March 2012.

During her visit, she watched children perform music, explored the hospice’s therapy spaces, and praised the bravery of the youngsters she encountered.

The Treehouse offers short breaks and palliative care to children and young people facing life-limiting conditions, alongside bereavement support for their families.

Catherine toured the music therapy room as well as a sensory room equipped with specialist lighting, a water bed and a projector.

Among those she met was Primrose Harvey, four, who suffers from hypoplastic right-heart syndrome, a rare congenital heart defect.

Primrose’s mother, Katie, explained to Catherine that her daughter has undergone three heart operations, one when she was just six days old and the most recent only a fortnight ago.

Catherine responded by calling Primrose a “super brave girl and brave parents too.”

Mrs Harvey described the encounter as “lovely,” saying: “It was really lovely just to talk about, you know, how amazing EACH is for us as a family.

“It’s really nice for her to come here and see first-hand how much they do for families.”

The Harvey family are regular visitors to The Treehouse, where they receive ongoing support.

Charlotte Freegard, 13, who lives with the rare genetic muscle condition nemaline myopathy, performed Ed Sheeran’s Perfect through a microphone for the Princess. Catherine clapped and told her she was “brilliant.”

Sitting beside Charlotte at a piano, Catherine said: “Charlotte, that was beautifully sung. Well done you.”

The Princess remarked on the range of musical equipment available and asked Charlotte whether she was “able to express yourself and really enjoy yourself,” to which the teenager replied: “Definitely.”

Freddie Ormrod, 11, who has Leigh syndrome, a mitochondrial genetic disorder causing epileptic seizures and severe physical disability, entertained Catherine with chimes and a tambourine.

When Freddie’s father James quipped about the limits of listening to chimes, Catherine laughed and replied: “It is noisy. Often in our household, the noisier the instrument, the better.”

Dressed in a Victoria Beckham green blazer and trousers, Catherine also donned a white hard hat and orange hi-vis vest to visit the construction site where The Treehouse is undergoing a significant expansion. The works, due for completion in 2028, will add a hydrotherapy pool, a wellbeing and therapies suite, and a new bedroom.

She also spent time with a bereavement support group, whose members spoke about how vital it is to have someone to talk to after losing a child.

Sam Morley, whose 17-year-old son Euan died two years ago from a degenerative neurological condition, said Catherine was “very interested and very empathetic.”

Ms Morley said: “She was asking a lot about the bereavement support for not only us but other siblings and things like that.”

She recalled that Euan “loved” visiting The Treehouse, adding: “He absolutely loved music. That was our big thing.”
