Historically, tens of thousands of enslaved people were transported to Guyana by Dutch and British plantation owners, forced to toil and perish in the colony’s sugar fields. The trauma of that era has been inherited across generations.

Guyana’s President Mohammed Ifraan Ali acknowledged to ITV that the King’s previous expressions of regret regarding the “darkest days” of the British Empire were appreciated. However, he insisted that such sentiments must be followed by a formal apology and reparatory justice.

When GB News approached Buckingham Palace for comment, a spokesman pointed to the President’s words during his interview: “I don’t think the trip is defined by this issue. The trip is much wider.

“The trip is defined by the King’s longstanding relationship with Guyana, his global activism for Guyana, his global leadership for Guyana, his partnership with Guyana, and his strong voice in promoting Guyana in terms of our environment, what we’re doing on climate change, the protection of the forest, the valuation of the forest and so on. So I think that is what defines the visit.”

In the Bahamas, campaigners have warned the monarch not to arrive without meaningful commitments.

The precise shape reparations might take remains a subject of ongoing debate. Most advocates believe Britain should, at a minimum, contribute to funding education and healthcare initiatives throughout the Caribbean as a means of redressing the lasting damage wrought by centuries of colonial exploitation.
