The AA has reiterated its calls for the Government to cut the rate of fuel duty as new data shows workers are paying hundreds of pounds more every year to fill up.

Fresh analysis from the AA shows that drivers are paying an average of 174.27p per litre, while diesel motorists continue to face near-record costs of 199.27p per litre.

Petrol is now 24 per cent more expensive than it was at the start of the Iran war, meaning drivers are forking out 42.56p more for every litre.

The AA estimates that someone commuting 30 miles every day in a petrol car averaging 40 miles per gallon could spend £1,367 a year over 46 working weeks.

Compared to prices seen before the Middle East conflict, drivers are now paying £334 more every year just to go to work.

The AA warned that this could have a particularly devastating impact on workers on lower wages who cannot work from home and have no option but to drive.

Diesel drivers are facing an even heavier burden, with a standard 55-litre tank of fuel now costing an average of £110, £32 more than at the start of the conflict.

Higher mileage drivers, such as taxi drivers, delivery drivers and tradespeople, could be paying hundreds of pounds every week to get to work.

The AA has now called on Chancellor John Healey to protect the existing 5p per mile fuel duty reduction and cut it by a further 5p.

This would help drivers save around 6p per litre at the pump once VAT is taken into account, allowing for savings of around £3.30.

AA President Edmund King said: “For millions of people, filling up isn’t discretionary spending, it’s part of the cost of going to work.

“A hospital cleaner starting an early shift, a supermarket worker travelling home late at night or a warehouse worker starting before public transport is running can’t simply choose to work from home.

“That’s why we’re asking the Chancellor to protect the existing fuel duty cut and go further with another 5p reduction. Working people and businesses need meaningful relief at the pump.”
