Brydon Carse has been charged by the Cricket Regulator over an incident outside a Derby nightclub but remains available for selection by England.

Carse was arrested and then de-arrested in the early hours of 23 August. A subsequent investigation into allegations of an assault was closed by Derbyshire Police with no action taken against the 31-year-old.

On Friday, the Regulator confirmed the pace bowler has been charged with breaching the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) professional conduct regulations.

“The matter will now be referred to the independent Cricket Discipline Panel for adjudication,” said the Regulator. “As the process is ongoing, no further comment will be made.”

Carse is alleged to have breached regulation 3.2, which states: “No participant may conduct themself in a manner, do any act or make any omission at any time which is improper or which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the ECB, the game of cricket or any cricketer or group of cricketers into disrepute.”

In the aftermath of the Derby controversy, Carse was dropped from the England squad to play Pakistan in the second Test at Lord’s and has not been called up since. He has continued to play county cricket for Durham.

On Thursday, he was left out of the squad for the one-day tri-series in Pakistan later this month, with decisions around his inclusion understood to be taken on a tour-by-tour basis.

Responding to the Regulator’s charge, an ECB statement said: “We are aware of the Cricket Regulator’s decision to charge Brydon Carse. Brydon now has the opportunity to respond through the established process.

“As we do not wish to prejudge the outcome, it would not be appropriate for us to comment further.”

Carse currently holds a two-year England central contract that expires in the autumn of 2027. The Regulator charge has not triggered any alteration to his England deal.

Last month, white-ball captain and Carse’s close friend Harry Brook said he needed a period away from the England team.

“I’m very good mates with Carsey,” Brook told BBC Sport. “I’ve spoken a lot with him. I think he just needs time away from the international scene.

“He’s working on a few things behind the scenes and hopefully he’ll be ready at some point in the future.”

England are supporting Carse through the Regulator’s process, though the player will be left to make his own response to the charge.

The Derby incident was another late-night drinking controversy in a year when England have been dogged by off-field problems.

As a result, Test captain Joe Root said he was “hacked off” and also addressed his team to remind them of their responsibilities.

White-ball coach Brendon McCullum said Carse would need to “get his house in order” before he returned to the England team.

And new Test coach Stephen Fleming said players will be expected to meet the “standards” of an England cricketer.

“We pick on runs and wickets primarily, but I think it’s foolish not to also say there are standards that need to be set,” said Fleming.

“You need to behave in accordance with your position. We’re in a very privileged position, and it’s understanding that privilege and what goes along with it. It can’t be convenient. You can’t be when it suits you to do the right things, then when you don’t want it to suit you, not.”
