More than 2,500 petrol stations around the UK are charging more than £2 a litre for diesel as drivers continue to face brutal prices at the pumps.

Fresh data from the AA shows that 2,577 fuel stations are listing diesel at £2 or more – around one third of the UK’s approximately 8,000 forecourts.

Analysis of the Government’s Fuel Finder service notes that forecourts along motorways and major roads are charging far more than £2.

While prices continue to rise, the UK average price of diesel has not yet hit £2, with drivers paying 119.72p per litre for diesel and 174.54p for unleaded petrol.

The AA has now called on drivers to compare prices in their local area to ensure they are getting the best prices possible.

Motorists using price comparison apps could make significant savings, especially as AA app data shows that motorists could save as much as 10p a litre at different forecourts in the same area.

AA President Edmund King called on the Government to scrap the proposed 5p fuel duty increase, as well as cut another 5p off the duty.

He suggested that this could be funded by extra VAT income collected by the Treasury from higher fuel prices since the outbreak of war between the United States and Iran.

Mr King continued, saying: “With household budgets so stretched, drivers may wish to consider if they can cut out short car journeys by walking or cycling or combining several trips to save fuel overall.

“AA research also shows that cutting speeds and changing driving style can save 15 per cent of fuel.

“The high prices also mean more people are exploring the opportunities of going electric. Searches for used EVs on the AA Cars portal have rocketed during this period of high fuel prices.”

GB News has rounded up the most expensive petrol and diesel prices using data from the Government’s Fuel Finder tool.
