Apple has built a dedicated concert venue in the Battersea Power Station, which completed its £9 billion renovation and reopened as a shopping and leisure destination in central London back in October 2022. The Grade II former coal-fired power station is home to Apple’s UK headquarters …and now it’s also the site of the Apple Music Hall.

This state-of-the-art live music venue has been built for bespoke, intimate performances.

The design of the venue takes inspiration from Battersea Power Station, incorporating brickwork, fluted arches, and bronze balconies to mirror the historic oriel windows. An enormous glass wall — a trademark flourish that you’ll find in most Apple Stores — offers a panoramic view of the concourse on the south bank of the River Thames.

Oliver Schusser, Apple Vice President of Apple Music and International Content, said: “Apple’s deep love for music dates all the way back to the very beginning, from the launch of the iPod to the long-running iTunes Music Festival to the debut of Apple Music. Today, with the opening of Apple Music Hall, we are once again taking an unprecedented step further in our commitment to artists and fans by supporting live music in ways only Apple can do.”

Apple Music Hall is a 600-capacity venue, with a 38-foot-wide stage that can be reconfigured for a traditional front-facing set or in-the-round theatrical experiences. Apple has equipped the venue with a 48-speaker spatial sound system positioned all around the audience.

Spatial Audio is supported by Apple’s popular AirPods earbuds and maps out the instruments and vocals in three-dimensional space, creating a surround sound-like experience. It’s included at no extra cost with Apple Music.

Apple has long supported live music in the UK, with its free iTunes Music Festival taking place at the Roundhouse in north London

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy praised the introduction of the new venue: “This is a huge vote of confidence in the UK as a global creative powerhouse. When a company of Apple’s scale backs British music and talent, it’s a signal of just how strong our creative sectors really are.

“Our industrial strategy is all about making Britain one of the best places in the world to invest, and the creative industries are a key part of that. These sectors are not only a source of immense national pride, but they also deliver real economic value for the country.”

The Californian company has built a Green Room for artists preparing to perform in the intimate venue, which can be recorded and distrbuted to fans worldwide

Behind the scenes, Apple Music Hall is designed to operate as a full production facility. Two dedicated recording and mix studios are built to professional standards so that every performance can be captured as a multitrack recording and mixed in Spatial Audio, live or after the fact.

The venue is also hardwired for 16 or more cameras that feed a purpose-built broadcast control room with infrastructure that supports iPhone video capture running in parallel alongside traditional broadcast cameras.

Artists can perform an intimate live show for fans at Apple Music Hall and walk out with a finished Spatial Audio recording, a broadcast-ready mix, and multicamera video — all from a single show.

Performances out of Apple Music Hall will also be livestreamed globally so fans outside of London can tune in to enjoy these one-time-only shows from their favourite artists.

Ex-BBC Radio 1 DJ, Zane Lowe, who now serves as Apple Music’s Global Creative Director and Lead Anchor for Apple Music 1, said: “At Apple Music, we care deeply about music, the artists who make it, and their life stories. We’re always looking for new opportunities to connect the artists and the fans because we are fans.

“What better way to celebrate this relationship than a new music venue where we get to experience amazing music in an amazing space and share it with the world. Great music and memories will be made at Apple Music Hall.”
