King Charles was left “giddy and elated” upon hearing of the death of Princess Diana, Earl Charles Spencer’s bomshell new book has claimed.

The brother of Diana claimed the then-Prince of Wales sounded “like a lottery winner” during a phone call on the night of her death, according to his new memoir Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, which is being serialised in the Daily Mail.

King Charles told Earl Spencer that he had already informed Princes William and Harry of their mother’s death, the book says.

“It all sounded strangely matter-of-fact, given the enormity of the disaster,” Earl Spencer writes.

Diana’s brother, 62, also said that he feels the King’s initial reaction “must have been to think more of how this event might free him to marry the woman he loved” as opposed to “appreciating the loss of one he did not”.

“It can be hard to feel too much sympathy for an ex-spouse, or those who care for them profoundly, after bitter divorce,” he added.

The memoir also alleges that King Charles, just days after Diana’s death, told her brother: “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough.”

Buckingham Palace issued a statement last night in response to the claims in the book, suggesting that “fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory”.

Buckingham Palace refused to comment further.
