Prince William and Catherine are today making their inaugural official trip to the Isle of Bute, where they will celebrate the spirit of community, volunteering and local heritage across the Scottish island.
The royal couple, who carry the titles Duke and Duchess of Rothesay north of the border, will spend the day in their namesake town and meet residents who dedicate their time to supporting fellow islanders.
The visit follows similar engagements on the Isles of Mull and Iona last year.
However, the couple’s appearance comes against a charged backdrop. Fewer than 24 hours earlier, Buckingham Palace took the rare step of publicly rebuking Earl Spencer over claims made in his new memoir that the King uttered disparaging remarks about Diana, Princess of Wales, in the days following her death in 1997.

Their first engagement of the day takes them to Bute Shinty Club in Rothesay, home to one of Scotland’s most enduring traditional sports.
Established in 1946, the club runs entirely on volunteer efforts, many of them former players, and serves as both a sporting institution and a social anchor for the island community.
Shinty, played with a curved wooden stick called a caman and a small leather ball, has deep roots on Bute, with the Buteman Cup contested locally since 1900.
William and Catherine will meet members of the senior and youth squads before joining volunteers and retired players inside the clubhouse. Built by residents, the clubhouse contains team photographs stretching back to 1907.
The couple will then move to the pitch at the Meadows, the club’s home ground for over a century, to observe training sessions.
Bute Shinty Club is among a handful of island-based teams in the sport and has made encouraging youth participation a central mission, partnering with local schools and actively creating opportunities for girls to take up the game.
Many of the volunteers who keep the club running were themselves supported by it during their own childhoods and are driven to pass that same sense of belonging on to the next generation.
Beyond the shinty club, the royal couple’s itinerary includes a stop at the Anchor Tavern Pub, a community-owned establishment where they will hear about the role that small, everyday interactions play in fostering resilient and connected communities.
William and Catherine will also spend time with people working to safeguard Bute’s natural environment, a cause described as close to both their hearts. The day’s programme is designed to spotlight the dedication of those who volunteer across the island.

The conversation allegedly centred on whether Princes William and Harry, aged 15 and 12 at the time, should walk behind their mother’s coffin during the procession on 6 September 1997.
According to the Earl, Charles cited his own experience of walking in Lord Mountbatten’s funeral procession in 1979. When Spencer pointed out that Charles had been 30 years old on that occasion, the Prince “went nuts”.
The Earl writes: “I assumed the pause signalled an effort to bring himself under control, but then he unleashed down the phone what I have always taken to be his pent-up contempt for Diana, and his horror that the world was so bowled over by her death. ‘Rest assured,’ he hissed, ‘we’ll forget her soon enough!'”
Buckingham Palace issued its response on Wednesday evening in what was widely noted as a highly unusual intervention. A spokesman said: “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”
