A member of the UK Armed Forces has died in a “road traffic incident” in Ukraine, the Ministry of Defence said.

The victim’s family has been informed following the incident on Saturday.

The family has since requested a period of grace before further details are made available to the public.

It is understood the event was not caused by hostile action.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: “It is with deep regret that we must announce that a member of the UK Armed Forces died in a road traffic incident in Ukraine on Saturday 12th September.

“The family have been informed and have requested a period of grace before further details are released.

“Our thoughts and our sympathies are with the individual’s loved ones at this difficult time.”

The Government has supported the Ukrainian fight against Russian forces, supporting Kyiv’s Armed Forces.

Over the same weekend, former Prime Minister and staunch Ukraine ally Boris Johnson hit out at Vladimir Putin and praised heroic Ukrainians after boarding a train near Russian strikes on the Ukrainian border.

Mr Johnson was travelling by train from Ukraine to Poland when he was woken by guards at 5am on Sunday and told to prepare for an evacuation after another passenger train behind his was attacked by a Russian drone in Volyn, just over a mile from the Polish border.

GB News understands the former Prime Minister was in the region but was neither affected nor evacuated by the attack.

Mr Johnson brushed off the incident, reassuring GB News that he was feeling “superb”.

The Russian drone attack struck Yahodyn-Dorohusk, one of the most important border crossings on the Ukraine-Polish border, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha announced yesterday.

Speaking on GB News this morning, Mr Johnson accused Putin of resorting to “terror-style” attacks after the former Prime Minister narrowly escaped a Russian drone strike.

The former Prime Minister told Andrew Pierce and Miriam Cates: “If he was trying to send a message, I think it was totally pointless.

“You’re looking at a pattern of behaviour by the Russian dictator which is getting more and more hysterical.

“He’s attacking Ukrainian infrastructure, he’s attacking Ukrainian trains.

“I think the number of attacks on Ukrainian railways in the last six months has been more than the last four years, you’ve got to see whatever happened at the weekend in that context.

“This is a guy who is absolutely on the back foot.

“He is losing record numbers of men and he is resorting to terroristic attacks on the heroic staff on Ukrainian railways, that is what’s going on.”
