Surrey squeezed past Somerset by one wicket with only three balls to spare to claim the final spot in the One-Day Cup knockout stages.
In a match between third and fourth at The Oval, the home side needed seven off the final over to chase down Somerset’s 295-7 off their 50 overs.
As it was, a wide from Ellie Anderson, a four from Kate Coppack and two scrambled leg-byes helped Surrey home to set up a match away to Hampshire on Wednesday, with the winner meeting The Blaze in the final at Utilita Bowl on Saturday.
It was despair for Somerset, whose total had been set up by 108 from captain Sophie Luff and a superb unbeaten 130 from Niamh Holland.
Former England player Kate Cross took 2-54 in her final match before retirement as Lancashire beat Yorkshire by seven wickets at Headingley, while Durham beat Warwickshire by four wickets in the day’s other game.
With The Blaze and Hampshire having finished their group matches and locked into the top two spots, it was all eyes on the match at The Oval.
Surrey opted to bowl and were made to suffer by a partnership of 196 for Somerset’s third wicket between Luff and Holland.
Luff fell for 108 but Holland carried on to reach her century off 113 balls and added 30 more in only 15 balls in a late blitz to set a challenging target.
Sune Luus scored 54 in Surrey’s reply, but when the South Africa all-rounder was out, the hosts were wobbling at 142-5. Captain Kira Chathli added 51 and Phoebe Franklin made 46 as they remained in contention, but when Franklin fell, the score was 257-8 in the 45th over.
Kalea Moore contributed a valuable 23 at number nine, until she was lbw in the penultimate over, one ball after having to call for a runner, with Alex Griffiths taking 5-54.
The target was seven as Anderson bowled the last over, but she started badly with a wide and then a low full toss was misfielded at mid-off to run away for four to Coppack (16 not out).
A leg-bye brought the scores level, which was enough for Surrey having started the day one point ahead, before another scramble from Coppack and last batter Dani Gregory secured a remarkable victory and a trip to Southampton on Wednesday.
