Michelle Ryan has finally spoken publicly about her departure from EastEnders, putting an end to months of speculation surrounding her exit from the BBC soap.
The actress confirmed that her character Zoe Slater will indeed be killed off, and that a one-year stint was always the intention from the very beginning.
“My agent and I sort of discussed from the outset that it would be a year,” Ms Ryan told Radio Times.
The 42-year-old made a sensational return to Albert Square last June after two decades away from Walford.

BBCHer comeback was met with widespread excitement, making the subsequent news of her departure all the more jarring for devoted viewers.
Ms Ryan’s exit will see Zoe’s story reach a permanent and irreversible conclusion in episodes airing next week.
Rather than having Zoe flee Walford once more, Ms Ryan said she recognised that death was the only fitting conclusion for a character who had spent the past year fighting to rebuild her life and relationships with her children.
“It just seemed like a natural conclusion for her to die, because for her to run away again would have gone against everything she’d fought for,” she explained.

GETTYDespite the fury expressed by many fans when rumours of the character’s demise first surfaced, Ms Ryan insisted she was at peace with the creative choice.
“As sad as it was to hear Zoe was going to be killed off, I was like, ‘I completely understand that,'” she said.
The actress also noted her desire to pursue varied roles beyond the soap, describing the year-long return as “such a gift.”
Ms Ryan was emphatic in dismissing reports of behind-the-scenes tension with EastEnders executive producer Ben Wadey over the decision to write Zoe out.
“I’ve loved working with Ben. I’m not somebody who’s just going to talk bulls***, and, actually, Ben has been so supportive the entire time, and I wouldn’t say it if it wasn’t true,” she stated.
She praised the wider cast as “the loveliest group of people,” highlighting the strong camaraderie on set and singling out reunions with Laila Morse, Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie as particular highlights.
Her final day of filming proved deeply emotional for colleagues. Ms Morse, who portrays Big Mo, became so overcome that she departed the set before any formal farewell could take place.
“No character is bigger than the show, and I’ve always been aware of that,” Ms Ryan reflected.
The specifics of Zoe’s final storyline bring her character full circle, according to Ms Ryan. Just as Zoe crashed her father Charlie’s taxi when she first arrived on the Square, her exit involves an attempt to steal a cab, during which she sustains a fatal blow to the head that she initially dismisses.
Viewers will witness the devastating aftermath on September 14, when Kat Moon discovers her daughter dead in bed.
Ms Ryan acknowledged that some fans feel short-changed by the storyline but took personal responsibility, reiterating that a year was always her intended timeframe.
Her parting words to the EastEnders faithful were heartfelt: “I just thank you from the bottom of my heart… it will always have a special place in my heart because it gave me my first big break.”
