A stand-off involving a wanted man was brought to an end when police arrested him while he slept on a roof.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said emergency services had responded to an incident at a property on Reservoir Street in Salford, spending two days at the scene.

Footage shows officers from the force’s tactical unit gently resting a ladder against the roof of a back porch, with an officer then grabbing the man while he was sleeping.

A struggle ensues and the man is pulled down, with his trousers appearing to fall down, before he is arrested by officers in the garden of the property.

Two police officers suffered minor injuries during the incident on Saturday.

GMP said it was asked by another force to arrest the man who who was wanted on recall to prison for other matters.

The force said a 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing public nuisance, criminal damage, public order offences, burglary and assaulting two police officers.

He remains in police custody.

Det Ch Insp Helen Bagnall said: “During two days of disruption to the local community, we worked continuously with our partners to bring this matter to a safe conclusion.

“This was an extensive use of vital policing resources and clearly demonstrates the dangers our officers face on a daily basis in order to protect the people of Greater Manchester.”

She thanked the people of Salford for their “patience and understanding” while emergency services dealt with the incident, adding some properties had been damaged as a result of the man’s actions.

She said the force would work with partners to ensure affected residents would be supported.
