Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder following an alleged stabbing at a hotel used to house asylum seekers, Surrey Police said.

Officers were called to the Stanwell Hotel in Staines, near Heathrow Airport, at 18:30BST on Saturday over reports a man had been stabbed.

One man in his 30s was taken to hospital with “life-threatening injuries”, the force said.

A Somali national in his 20s has been arrested and remains in police custody.

“Due to the nature of the report, armed officers were dispatched to the scene and assisted with the arrest,” Detective Superintendent Kate Hyder said.

In a statement released late on Saturday night, she said: “There remains a police presence in the area while we carry out initial enquiries.”

She added: “We understand this incident has caused concern within the local community, and I encourage you to speak to local officers.”

Police said they are not looking for anyone else linked to the incident.
