Diesel prices have hit another unwanted milestone for motorists up and down the country as a tank of fuel now costs £100.

Fresh data from the RAC shows that the average price of a litre of fuel is 181.45p per litre, although this is still 10p less than the previous high during the Iran war.

Motorists with a standard family car, which contains a 55-litre tank, filling up with diesel will now face a staggering £100 charge at the pumps.

The price of diesel is rapidly growing, with RAC Fuel Watch analysis showing that prices are rising by 0.35p per day.

Diesel costs are also 39.1p per litre more expensive than they were at the start of the conflict in the Middle East on February 28.

At the beginning of the war, motorists were paying an average of 142.38p per litre, with prices now soaring by more than 27 per cent since then.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, said: “Diesel has gone up by a frightening 17p (16.93p) a litre to 181.5p – a rise of 10 per cent – since a conflict low point of 164.5p on 9 July.

“This means the cost of a full tank of diesel for a 55-litre family car is once again at £100, something drivers haven’t had to endure since early June.”

Petrol prices are at their highest price since the start of the war, despite falling to their lowest point less than a month ago.

Mr Williams highlighted that a standard 55-litre tank of fuel is £89 – the highest it has been since the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader.

The RAC expert continued, saying: “But with the price of crude oil falling to just below $80 (£60) on Tuesday, there is hope on the horizon for drivers on the back of news of supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz potentially being eased.

“Daily price rises should come to a halt and reductions should start to appear, providing the cost of a barrel stays around this level.”

It comes as US President Donald Trump accused oil companies of “making too much money” from the Iran war, adding that they should “give some of that back to the public”.

Speaking at the White House earlier this week, Mr Trump said: “They’re making too much money based on a shortage. I don’t like it.”

BP posted profits of £4.2billion between April and June, marking the highest level since the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

GB News has compiled the most expensive petrol and diesel prices seen across the UK so far in August, using Fuel Finder data.
