Royal Mail has issued a warning that deliveries across 106 postcodes may not arrive on schedule today, with residents in Yeovil, Wolverhampton and Margate among those potentially affected.

The postal service attributed the disruption to localised problems, including elevated rates of staff sickness and resourcing difficulties.

A statement published on the company’s website said: “We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. In a small number of local offices, this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors.”

Today’s disruption follows a sustained pattern of similar problems in recent weeks. Over the weekend, the delivery service flagged delays affecting 87 postcode areas, whilst 90 postcodes were subject to comparable alerts last week.

The week before that saw an even larger number of areas hit, with 153 postcodes experiencing hold-ups. The persistent difficulties come under the ownership of Czech billionaire Daniel Křetínský, who controls the postal operator.

With more than 3,000 postcode districts operating across the country, the repeated warnings suggest that staffing and operational pressures continue to pose a significant challenge for the service.

These ongoing delays arrive amid growing criticism of Royal Mail’s delivery standards, with just 77 per cent of first-class letters reaching their destination on time last year, falling well short of the 93 per cent target the company is expected to meet.

In a separate development, the postal operator has redesigned its “something for you” cards, which are left when a parcel cannot be handed directly to a recipient.

The updated cards now feature a QR code alongside a nine-digit reference number, enabling customers to access information about their delivery more easily. Customers can also use Royal Mail’s online postcode checker to monitor service disruptions in their area.

A Royal Mail spokesperson previously said: “There are more than 3,000 postcode districts across the UK. To keep customers informed, we publish details of the local offices currently affected by temporary delivery issues, although being listed does not mean every address in that area is affected.

“Where delays occur, we provide additional support to local teams to help clear any outstanding mail and return services to normal as quickly as possible.”

Royal Mail operates deliveries six days a week, excluding Sundays. First-class post is intended to arrive the day after it is sent, while second-class items should be delivered within two days of dispatch.
