Meghan Markle made an unexpected appearance on MasterChef Australia’s eighteenth series, taking her place on the judging panel alongside regulars Jean-Christophe Novelli, Poh Ling Yeow and Sofia Levin.

The 44-year-old set competitors a challenge centred around her preferred ingredients, presenting a spread that included carrots, Jerusalem artichokes, Brussels sprouts, celeriac, Australian honey, macadamias, quince, citrus fruits and strawberries.

During the challenge, Meghan proudly disclosed that Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, happily consume Brussels sprouts.

“My kids eat Brussels sprouts,” the Duchess of Sussex declared.

Meghan also spoke candidly about the role food plays in her family life.

She said: “Food and cooking to me is really a love language.

“I think it’s such a great way to connect. It’s something that can feel sentimental and meaningful and It’s how I, it’s how I show my nurturing and love for my friends, family, and my kids.”

The Duchess of Sussex confessed, however, that the high-stakes atmosphere of the MasterChef kitchen did not suit her natural temperament.

“I don’t like to cook that way. I like to cook in a really relaxed fashion,” she noted.

When it came to her palate, the duchess leaned into her Californian roots, expressing a fondness for grilled fish, grilled meats, generous amounts of citrus, and simple herbs such as basil and oregano.

The surprise guest took contestants aback. Finalist Petro Papathomas, who recalled watching Meghan in Suits, admitted to being somewhat starstruck.

“She was really genuine. There’s been so much written about her, you kind of don’t know what to believe, but I loved her. She was so kind and talks really intelligently about food as well,” he told TV Week.

Fellow finalist Casper Kenworthy praised the former actress’s composure before the cameras, noting it had a calming effect on the competitors.

“Having someone who has really good confidence on camera actually makes us more calm. So that was really valuable,” he said.

Kenworthy added that Meghan ranked among their favourite guest judges, describing her as genuinely curious and eager to engage with each contestant’s work.
