A much-loved community football club has been forced to halt all training sessions and matches after caravans and vehicles arrived at its home ground without permission.

Albion Rovers FC in Newport announced via Facebook that an unauthorised traveller encampment has established itself on the playing fields at Kimberley Park, located off Malpas Road.

As a result, the site has been closed indefinitely pending resolution of the situation.

Newport City Council has been informed of the encampment, according to the club’s statement to players and their families.

Officials said they have already contacted those occupying the site and the council is now working with all relevant parties to resolve the matter swiftly.

The decision to suspend activities stems from serious health, safety and safeguarding concerns, the club explained in an update to families.

Coaches highlighted that moving vehicles, caravans and temporary structures on the site pose significant traffic dangers for young children attending sessions.

There are also fears that the pitches themselves could become hazardous if damaged or contaminated.

The club warned that any litter or human waste left on the grass would render the playing surfaces unsafe for use.

Before football can resume, the pitches will need to be thoroughly inspected once the encampment has departed.

Club officials stated that maintaining the controlled, predictable and safe environment demanded by safeguarding regulations is simply not possible while the encampment remains on the playing surfaces.

Families have been urged to avoid visiting Kimberley Park while the camp is present.

In the meantime, Albion Rovers said it would explore alternative training locations where feasible.

The club also confirmed it would be in contact with league organisers regarding any home fixtures affected by the closure, with a view to rescheduling matches.

No timeline has been given for when normal activities might resume at the ground.

The disruption has extended beyond Albion Rovers, with nearby Albion FC also forced to postpone its youth sessions.

Safeguarding officer Hollie Giles informed parents at the Albion Playing Fields that an unauthorised encampment had prompted the suspension.

He cited identical worries about traffic hazards, sanitation and child protection.

Albion Rovers expressed gratitude to players, parents and supporters for their patience, understanding and continued support during this difficult period.

The club pledged to share further information through its official social media channels as soon as updates become available.
