Six people, including three children, have been taken to hospital after a deadly crash on Scotland’s busiest motorway.

The crash, involving a Mercedes Vito minivan and an HGV, took place in the early hours of this morning on the M8 near Chapelhall.

The incident happened around 2am, according to reports, and the HGV driver is said to have escaped without injury.

Sergeant Elaine Scott said: “I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or who may have dash-cam footage, and has not yet spoken to or provided this information to officers, to contact us as soon as possible.

“The road re-opened around 7.30am, same date. I want to thank members of the public for their patience while we investigated this serious crash.

“Anyone with information should call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0420 of Saturday, July 11, 2026.”

The M8 motorway is the busiest motorway in Scotland, carrying more than 150,000 vehicles per day in parts and connecting Glasgow and Edinburgh.

During a heatwave, driving safely requires avoiding non-essential trips during peak heat, staying hydrated, and inspecting your vehicle’s tires and coolant levels.

Road surfaces can soften in extreme temperatures, and increased breakdown and crash risks can increase.

Drivers are advised to check real-time updates before heading out.
