Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher could not resist poking fun at England captain Harry Kane after the striker’s voice gave out following a passionate rendition of Wonderwall in Mexico City.

Kane had thrown himself into the post-match celebrations at the Azteca Stadium, joining teammates and supporters in belting out the 1995 Oasis anthem that has become England’s unofficial soundtrack throughout the 2026 World Cup.

The Three Lions skipper was left barely able to speak during his subsequent interview with BBC Sport’s Kelly Sommers.

Kane acknowledged during the interview that the pitch of his voice was out of his control, laughing with Sommers as she continued to ask him questions.

Now, Oasis legend Gallagher has taken to X to tease Kane, writing: “It’s hard work that singing Harry Kane cmon ENGLAND cmon WONDERWALL.” (sic)

Fans promptly rushed to react to Gallagher’s joke. One X user even asked if he’d join the team for a rendition if England made the final.

“Oh I’ll show Harry how it’s done,” the singer cheekily penned in response.

And Gallagher clearly isn’t afraid of England’s next opponents, Norway. “We have Harry Kane and Jordan Henderson,” he bluntly replied when asked if he fears The Vikings.

One Oasis fan weighed in to ask Gallagher if he “gets a buzz” seeing the England team adopt Wonderwall as their unofficial anthem.

“Yes me lion this is what life is about it’s magic,” he replied. (sic)

The victory itself was a rollercoaster affair that saw Thomas Tuchel’s side survive intense pressure from the tournament co-hosts.

Jude Bellingham set the tone early, netting twice within 98 seconds to hand England a commanding advantage.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Mexico responded through Quiñones shortly before the interval, and matters grew more complicated when Jarell Quansah received his marching orders in the 54th minute.

Despite being a man down, Kane stepped up to convert from the spot six minutes later, restoring England’s two-goal cushion.

The captain then found himself on the wrong end of a penalty decision, with Raul Jiménez reducing the deficit from 12 yards in the 69th minute.

England held firm, however, securing passage to the quarter-finals against a Mexico side who had previously lost just twice at the Azteca.

Kane’s croaky post-match comments to the BBC revealed just how much the occasion had taken out of him.

“It was a crazy game. We had to fight and we had to find something,” the England skipper managed to rasp.

“I’ve just been singing, I can’t really talk. The occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way.”

The striker described the evening as “one of my favourite nights in my career,” highlighting the squad’s “complete desire, determination and pride in the shirt.”

On the controversial penalty he conceded, Kane remained philosophical.

“I thought I got to the ball first, it was one of those days. The ref gave a lot against us. In the end it didn’t matter so I’m happy.”

Manager Thomas Tuchel was equally enthusiastic about his team’s display, describing the match as “an emotional roller-coaster” and declaring himself proud to have been part of such a special occasion.

Gallagher wasn’t the only big name to celebrate the win on social media. Sir David Beckham shared his enthusiasm across Instagram, stating: “Now that’s a performance wow. There was no other way of winning this game other than that. Absolutely brilliant.”

Meanwhile, Top Gear’s James May took to X to mock naysayers who’d encouraged fans to miss the game given its early hours kick-off time.

EastEnders star Ross Kemp went further still, posting: “That is without a doubt the best England performance I think I’ve ever seen. That is without a doubt true English spirit.”

Chicken Shop Date presenter Amelia Dimoldenberg declared she “can’t cope,” whilst Made in Chelsea’s Jamie Laing proclaimed: “It’s coming home baby!”
