Tina O’Brien has opened up about her character’s future on Coronation Street following the dramatic revelation that Sarah Platt killed Theo Silverton (played by James Cartwright).

The actress, who has portrayed Sarah on and off for more than 25 years, acknowledged she must place her faith in the show’s writers regarding what comes next.

Sarah was unmasked as Theo’s killer during Monday evening’s episode, bringing an end to a mystery that had gripped viewers for months.

The dramatic instalment featured flashbacks to the fateful night in April, finally showing audiences what truly occurred.

Ms O’Brien has now spoken about the big reveal, sharing she had known about the storyline for several months before it aired.

“I think, based on previous episodes, there were a lot of people who thought Sarah was protecting Gary (Mikey North) or that Sarah and Gary maybe saw something that night and were trying to protect somebody else, when in fact it was actually Sarah, which I think will have come as a shock to a lot of people,” Ms O’Brien explained.

Opening up about Sarah’s future, she cryptically added: “I genuinely didn’t worry, at the end of the day this job is incredible, but to be an actor is not necessarily a job for life.

“So, I just was really excited to be given the honour of being the murderer.”

The revelation puts to rest numerous fan theories that had circulated online about Gary’s potential involvement in the crime.

When Ms O’Brien learned through the scripts that her character would be the killer, she admitted to being genuinely surprised by the development.

“I was really shocked, but for me, personally, I completely understand how it happened, why it happened.

“For me to get into her character and her head, I feel like, in that moment, she didn’t feel like she had any other choice,” she said.

The actress revealed that cast members had been speculating amongst themselves about the murderer’s identity, with many playing detective in the green room after learning a killing would take place.

By the time the actress was called to her meeting with producers, she had already suspected she might be the one.

Rather than feeling anxious about potential consequences for her role, Ms O’Brien embraced the storyline with enthusiasm.

The fatal confrontation unfolded after Sarah went searching for Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) and heard his phone ringing from nearby scaffolding.

Upon climbing up to investigate, she encountered Theo rather than Todd.

“She said some things that were pretty threatening so then he wouldn’t let her leave. The way he was talking, it sounded like he’d done something to Todd, as in he was dead, that’s how it felt to Sarah, that he’d done something awful to Todd,” Ms O’Brien explained.

The situation escalated when Theo made a chilling threat to Sarah.

“Then he said, if you think what I did to Todd was bad, and I loved him, think what I can do to you!

“He was coming towards her, and I think in that moment, as far as she was concerned, it was do or die,” the actress revealed.
