An Asda worker has been nominated for a service award after his remarkable gesture in towards an elderly shopper.

Phil Snow-Griffiths, 23, who works as a produce team leader at the Birchwood branch in Warrington, spotted the woman attempting to manage a large amount of shopping on her own.

The customer, who wishes to remain anonymous, had chosen to “brave it” and complete her shopping trip without assistance from her regular carer.

Mr Snow-Griffiths offered his support when he realised she was having difficulty at the checkout.

Mr Snow-Griffiths saw the woman trying to balance a 24-pack of soft drink cans on her walking frame.

Under such circumstances, he thought she would have faced considerable difficulty getting home safely with her shopping.

Mr Snow-Griffiths said: “She had trouble walking, so would have really struggled.

“It wouldn’t have been safe to have the items balanced on her walking frame.”

The elderly shopper had originally intended to catch the bus back home, but, according to Asda, “Phil wouldn’t have any of it”.

Instead, he guided her through the payment process, found her a seat, and organised a taxi to take her home.

The supermarket worker has since been put forward for an Asda Service Superstar Award in recognition of his compassionate actions.

He told the BBC: “I made sure I got all the shopping in the taxi for her before it left.”

The customer expressed deep gratitude for the assistance she received, according to Mr Snow-Griffiths.

He said: “She was very grateful, but I am always happy to help and support whenever and wherever I can.”

His thoughtful actions generated significant praise on social media.

Another wrote: “What a lovely young man, keep up the amazing work Phil, you are truly making a huge difference.”

Customer manager Michelle Simms, who put Mr Snow-Griffiths forward for an Asda service superstar award following the incident, said: “The customer was so grateful for his help, for his thoughtfulness and care given.

“Not only does Phil support every area of the shop but he is also excellent with our customers and is always happy to help.”
