A 14-year-old girl has been charged with three counts of attempted murder after a knife attack at a school in Manchester.

Two pupils – both 14 – and a male member of staff were hurt at the Co-op Academy on Tuesday morning.

Last night, counter-terrorism police took the helm of the investigation into the attack.

But it has not been declared a terrorist incident.

Police have now confirmed the girl has been charged.

The teenager has also been charged with two counts of possessing a bladed article on school premises.

She will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Friday.

Detective Chief Superintendent Jonathan Chadwick, head of Counter Terrorism Policing North West, described the charges as “extremely serious”.

“These are extremely serious charges against a young girl and, working closely with Greater Manchester Police, we continue to support the victims and their families and offer support to the wider school community, who have been deeply affected by what happened,” he said.

“Although charges have now been secured, our investigation is still ongoing, and we continue to work with local policing colleagues in the Blackley area.”

All three who were injured have been released from hospital and suffered no serious injuries, police had earlier said.

The Co-op Academy on Plant Hill Road is a mixed secondary school for students aged between 11 and 16.

The school has around 1,650 pupils – and was the site of an unrelated stabbing in 2022, when an 11-year-old girl was knifed in the shoulder nearby.

The academy was rated Good in its most recent Ofsted inspection.
