Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign England defender Niamh Charles from Chelsea.

The left-back is set to depart after six years at the club in which she has made 173 appearances.

During her time at Chelsea, Charles has won five Women’s Super League titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups.

She was also part of the squad under former manager Emma Hayes who reached the Women’s Champions League final in 2021.

Charles’ departure from Chelsea coincides with the arrival of Republic of Ireland’s Katie McCabe, who joined from Arsenal last month.

City, who won their first WSL title in a decade in May, want to add squad depth in the transfer window as they look to challenge in Europe next season.

They are also expected to bring in England forward Beth Mead, who left Arsenal last month.

Charles would provide vital WSL and Women’s Champions League experience, while the England defender looks to gain regular game time and cement her place in Sarina Wiegman’s squad for next year’s World Cup.
