Nationwide Building Society has confirmed it has paid out free £100 bonus payments to millions of Britons, but who is eligible for this lump sum?

Britain’s largest mutual has distributed £100 payments to more than four million qualifying members within just 24 hours as part of its annual Fairer Share Payment scheme.

Nationwide launched the rollout following its full-year financial results announcement on May 21, with the mutual setting a deadline of 30th June to complete all outstanding transfers.

The initiative rewards customers who use Nationwide as their primary bank while also holding eligible savings accounts or mortgage products.

The scheme forms part of Nationwide’s broader member rewards strategy, which saw the organisation return £1.5billion to its customers during the financial year concluding on March 31, 2026.

To qualify for the £100 payment, members must have chosen the building society for their day-to-day banking needs and maintained a qualifying savings or mortgage product.

This marks the fourth year running that the building society has made the Fairer Share Payment available to eligible customers.

The annual distribution has been a feature since 2023, though it remains contingent upon the mutual’s financial health and requires approval from the Board each year.

Nationwide’s own research reveals how consumers would typically spend a £100 windfall, with practical priorities dominating responses.

Some 16 per cent indicated they would put the money towards a substantial grocery shop, while equal proportions of 13 per cent said they would either save for a holiday or set it aside as spending money for trips abroad.

Around 12 per cent of respondents said they would treat themselves to a restaurant meal, with an identical proportion preferring to order a takeaway instead.

These choices illustrate how households are balancing essential costs against affordable pleasures.

Stephen Noakes, Nationwide’s retail director, said: “We’ve made strong progress with this year’s Fairer Share payment, surpassing four million payments on the first day.

“We’re pleased to be able to reward eligible members with £100 for the fourth consecutive year, reflecting Nationwide’s strong financial position.”

The building society first introduced the Fairer Share Payment in 2023, establishing it as an annual benefit for qualifying members.

Each year’s distribution depends on Nationwide maintaining sufficient financial strength, with the final decision resting with the Board before any payments can proceed.
