NatWest Group has confirmed that nine more bank branches will shut down permanently across Scotland, England and Wales, bringing an end to the banking giant’s current restructuring programme.

The latest bank branch closures represent the final wave of network changes, with the group simultaneously committing to halt any additional branch closure announcements until at least 2029.

This pledge covers all three of the group’s high street brands: NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank.

Six Royal Bank of Scotland locations are among those affected north of Hadrian’s Wall, as well as three other NatWest branches in Wales.

All nine sites will cease operations between September 8 and 17, 2026. Following these shutdowns, the group’s network will comprise 336 branches in total.

This breaks down to 249 NatWest locations across England and Wales, 62 Royal Bank of Scotland branches, and 25 Ulster Bank outlets serving Northern Ireland.

Solange Chamberlain, chief executive of retail banking at NatWest Group, said: “This is an important moment for our customers and the communities we serve.”

She added: “We are investing to offer customers a seamless mix of ways to bank with us, including over the phone, digitally, or via our free-to-use ATM network while continuing to support those who prefer face-to-face banking in branches and community banking hubs.”

Mobile branch services will also be expanded, bringing face-to-face banking to more communities nationwide.

The bank indicated it remains open to establishing new branches where customer demand clearly exists.

Despite these investments in physical infrastructure, the vast majority of NatWest’s customers have embraced digital channels, with 95 per cent now conducting their everyday banking online.

The group has also delivered more than 150,000 financial health check sessions this year. Nationwide Building Society has made a comparable commitment, pledging to maintain all 605 of its branches until at least 2030.
