Gracie Cochrane will not return as Ginny Weasley in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series beyond the first season, her family has confirmed.
The young actress, who was cast as the youngest Weasley sibling in the highly anticipated reboot, announced her departure in a joint statement shared with her family.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after Season 1,” the statement read.
Her family added that working on the wizarding world production “has been truly wonderful” and thanked casting director Lucy Bevan alongside the wider production team.
HBO has also publicly supported the decision.
A spokesman said: “We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season one of the show.
“We wish Gracie and her family the best.”
The departure creates a major recasting challenge for producers given Ginny’s much larger role in the second story.

While the character only appears briefly in the opening instalment, Ginny becomes central to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets after being manipulated into unleashing a deadly serpent hidden beneath Hogwarts.
Production on the debut season has already wrapped, with the series currently scheduled to launch this Christmas.
Work on the second season is also understood to be progressing at Leavesden Studios near London.
The new adaptation stars Dominic McLaughlin as the young wizard who discovers his magical heritage after receiving his Hogwarts acceptance letter.

Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and the production team are said aiming to begin filming the second season this autumn.
The accelerated production schedule is designed to prevent the young cast from visibly ageing between seasons.
The search for a new actress to take over the role of Ginny Weasley is now underway.
Fans of the young star were quick to share their sadness about her departure from the series on social media.
“Gosh, she and Draco were my favorites,” one disappointed fan wrote, as another added: “I don’t believe it!”
“Wow, she was PERFECT” a third added.
Someone else penned: “What the heck, no!”
“WHAT!?????” another commented.
The upcoming Harry Potter reboot has already faced major backlash ahead of its planned Christmas 2026 launch, with much of the controversy surrounding J. K. Rowling’s involvement as executive producer amid criticism over her views on transgender issues.
The series has also sparked fierce debate over several casting decisions, including Paapa Essiedu being cast as Severus Snape and American actor John Lithgow taking on the role of Albus Dumbledore.
Fans have additionally criticised the reboot’s darker visual style and reports of expanded storylines not featured in the original books.
Despite the backlash, HBO has already committed to a second season before the first has aired.
