Sadiq Khan has condemned the “very worst of humanity” after two Jewish men were stabbed in a terror attack that struck Golders Green

The London Mayor said he was “appalled and angry” over the rise in antisemitic violence in the capital.

“I’m disgusted that Jewish people are going to bed frightened. They’re waking up frightened. They’re living their lives frightened.

“This is no way to live,” Sir Sadiq said.

“I’m appalled and angry that over the last few weeks we’ve seen places of worship attacked because they are Jewish buildings attacked because they are Jewish,” he stressed.

The London Mayor expressed major concern over the rise in antisemitism in the capital.

“I’ve lived in London all my life. There’s been anti-Semitism faced by Londoners throughout my life.

“But I’ve never seen this sort of fear. My friends, colleagues and neighbours have never experienced this level of attacks on Jewish people across our country,” he said.

Sir Sadiq went on to pledge to commit more police to the issue.

“What the community will see over the course of the next few days is additional police officers in and around the community.”

He also called for “support and solidarity from non-Jewish Londoners”.

The mayor admitted that today’s attack “isn’t a wake-up call” to him or his team because “we know the fear faced by Jewish people”.

Addressing the attack in Golders Green directly, Sir Sadiq said: “We’ve seen today the very worst of humanity in the acts of this terrorist.

“We’ve also seen today the very best of humanity, the very best of London.

“I want to thank the heroic police officers, Jewish volunteers who volunteer for Shomron and Hatzalah, for their response to the actions of this terrorist, but also for their response.

“More Jewish Londoners may well have been attacked and may well have been injured, even worse than the two who were attacked today,” he said.

“I’m sure I speak on behalf of all Londoners, whether they are Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, members of organised faith or not in saying that in our thoughts and prayers today and tonight will be the two Londoners who have been attacked today in a fight of their life for no other reason but because they’re Jewish.”

At 11.16am this morning, officers were first called to Highfield Avenue to reports of a stabbing in Highfield Road, Golders Green.

Two men, one in his 70s and one in his 30s, were treated at the scene for stab wounds.

The suspect attempted to stab police officers and was tasered before being arrested, in what Scotland Yard have now declared a terrorist incident.

Officers are working to establish the nationality and background of the suspect.
