A motorist has been banned from driving after travelling at 53mph on the M4 motorway almost two years ago.

A 60-year-old man had his licence taken off him after he was caught driving at 53mph on the motorway in June 2024.

At the time, there was a 40mph speed restriction in place on the M3 near Welford, Newbury, prompting the man to fall foul of the rules.

The man, from New Barnet, was caught speeding on the eastbound carriageway of the M4, with another instance seeing him travel at 50mph on the same stretch on August 9, 2024.

The driver was found guilty of two counts of exceeding a temporary speed limit at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court last month.

Magistrates slapped the motorist with a 12-month driving ban and three penalty points on his licence.

He was also expected to pay a £220 fine, £85 in court costs and an additional £88 surcharge.

According to the Swindon Advertiser, the driver has until April 27 to pay all fines in full.

Drivers can sometimes be caught out by temporary speed limits, especially if they are used to standard speeds on roads they travel on frequently.

The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three penalty points on a licence, although it can be higher depending on a range of factors.

Any driver caught by a speed camera will receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution and a Section 172 notice within 14 days of being spotted.

Once they have sent the Section 172 notice back to the police, they will either be sent a Fixed Penalty Notice or be informed that they need to go to court.

After receiving an FPN, they can plead guilty, at which point they will be fined £100 and issued with three points.

Alternatively, they can attend a speed awareness course, which generally costs around £100 and lasts three hours.

This option can be chosen by the police if they believe it is appropriate for their offence and they haven’t attended a course in the last three years.

Data from Kent County Council suggests that drivers who attend the course will “significantly reduce” their chances of being involved in a crash.

Drivers can lose their licence if they collect six points within two years of getting their licence

If a driver pleads not guilty to the speeding offence, they could be fined more and handed additional penalty points.

They can be fined a percentage of their weekly income, up to a maximum of £1,000, or £2,500 if they were driving on a motorway.

Younger motorists face additional restrictions when they are caught speeding, as collecting six or more points in the two years after passing their test can lead to their licence being revoked.
