Catherine, The Princess of Wales put a rising British-Nigerian designer in the global spotlight during today’s State Visit.

The Princess of Wales selected a striking grey coat dress by Tolu Coker, an up-and-coming British-Nigerian designer, for today’s ceremonial welcome of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

Ms Coker, a London-based multi-disciplinary artist, received mentorship and funding from The King’s Trust when establishing her eponymous label in 2018.

The charity, formerly known as The Prince’s Trust, supports young entrepreneurs launching their careers.

Her collections have since earned recognition for their masterful tailoring, preservation of artisanal techniques, and vibrant elements reflecting her Nigerian heritage, whilst frequently exploring themes of social change.

This marks the second time royal attention has fallen on Ms Coker in recent weeks.

King Charles sat front row at her autumn/winter 2026 show during London Fashion Week in February, positioned between British Fashion Council chief executive Laura Weir and designer Stella McCartney.

The double-breasted piece from Coker’s autumn/winter 2024 collection features distinctive white lapels reminiscent of 1980s fashion, with corsetry-inspired detailing at the back lending a contemporary edge.

The style echoes the looks favoured by Diana, Princess of Wales, whose fashion choices Catherine frequently references.

For accessories, Catherine opted for a coordinating hat by Jane Taylor millinery, her familiar snakeskin Boss heels, and a black crocodile-effect Mulberry top-handle bag.

Though more modern than the traditional coat dresses Catherine typically wears from established houses such as Catherine Walker, Alexander McQueen and Jenny Packham, the Tolu Coker design demonstrates her commitment to diplomatic dressing and honouring the visiting nation.

Ms Coker expressed her delight at the royal endorsement on social media, posting a photograph of Catherine wearing her creation to her Instagram story.

The designer’s personal account currently has 2,136 followers, whilst her brand page boasts 67,800.

These figures are anticipated to climb significantly in the coming days following the high-profile exposure.

The princess’s choice represents a powerful statement of support for one of Britain’s most promising young designers, demonstrating that emerging talent and established craftsmanship can work together to striking effect.

When such choices also achieve the perfect diplomatic note, the result proves all the more impactful.

Catherine and Prince William met the presidential couple at Windsor’s Fairmont Hotel before accompanying them to greet the King and Queen.

The occasion marks the first Nigerian State Visit to Britain in 37 years.

Following the formal welcome at Datchet Road, where both nations’ anthems were performed, the royal party and their guests proceeded through Windsor’s streets in horse-drawn carriages.

A State Banquet at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Hall will take place this evening.
