Katy Perry has sparked social media fury after her response to a distressed fan was branded “tone deaf” by critics online.

The controversy began on Tuesday when a follower posted on X expressing her financial struggles and contemplating selling her ticket to one of the American singer’s forthcoming European concerts.

“I so badly don’t wanna be here anymore. I’m not cut out for this world like I cannot afford to live at this rate and I’m so close to selling my Katy ticket,” the fan wrote.

The 41-year-old pop star, whose Lifetimes Tour reportedly generated more than $134 million in ticket sales last year, offered a brief reply: “But I am looking forward to seeing you!”

The exchange quickly went viral, prompting widespread criticism.

Critics swiftly condemned the singer’s reply as insensitive, with many pointing out that she failed to offer any practical support.

“This is so grim. Not even an offer of a free ticket or help offered… girl,” one user wrote.

Another described the response as “truly evil,” adding: “Not even a hang in there just guilt over reselling the ticket to survive and the sheep all thinking that’s a reasonable response. Madness.”

Further criticism poured in, with one person writing: “Girl, then give her a free ticket. The f***?”

Others accused the Teenage Dream singer of being disconnected from ordinary people’s struggles.

“God, you are so out of touch. Someone is clearly going through it and your best response is ‘but I’m looking forward to seeing you!’ Gross. Do better,” another fan added.

However, the backlash was not universal, with numerous supporters rushing to defend Ms Perry.

“Honestly, if she did help publicly, you’d just say she was doing it for clout. There is literally no winning with people like you,” one fan argued.

Another echoed this sentiment, posting: “You’d be calling her performative the second she helped publicly. You’re just looking for a reason to be mad.”

The social media user herself appeared appreciative of the interaction, responding to Ms Perry’s message with “I love you” and later telling followers she was “grateful” for the acknowledgement.

When concerned users enquired about her wellbeing, she reassured them: “Yeah just going through a tough patch at the moment.”

The following day, the fan reflected on the unexpected attention, writing: “Honestly didn’t expect to wake up to find Katy saw my tweet. How? I don’t know but I’m grateful and I hope it helps others too.”

The criticism comes despite Ms Perry having previously demonstrated compassion during her tour.

At a Detroit concert in August, the singer remained by a fan named McKenna’s side after she collapsed on stage, kneeling beside her until medical assistance arrived.

“Dear God, we pray for McKenna, that she will come back fully and brighter and better than ever. Amen,” the singer said, leading the remaining fans in prayer.

She later acknowledged the overwhelming nature of performing before thousands, telling the audience: “Sometimes you’re so brave and you can get on stage, and it’s overwhelming. I understand that feeling.”

Away from the stage, Perry is now in a relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, having separated from Orlando Bloom last year after nearly nine years together. The former couple share five-year-old daughter Daisy Dove.
