Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis has been sacked as manager of Flamengo just hours after the Brazilian club recorded an 8-0 win to reach this weekend’s Campeonato Carioca final.

Luis, 40, averaged a trophy every 14 games as he led Flamengo to seven titles in his 100 matches in charge since replacing former Brazil coach Tite in September 2024.

Flamengo have lost back-to-back finals in 2026, finishing runners-up in the Supercopa do Brasil and Recopa Sudamericana last month.

But, after completing an 11-0 aggregate victory over Madureira following Monday night’s 8-0 second-leg win, they will have the chance to win a third consecutive Carioca title when they face Fluminense in Sunday’s final.

However, Luis will not be in charge after the club posted a short statement announcing his dismissal at 00:59 local time.

“Filipe Luis will no longer be in charge of the professional team. Ivan Palanco (assistant coach) and Diogo Linhares (physical trainer) are also leaving the club along with him,” the club said.

“Flamengo thanks former player and coach Filipe Luis for everything that was achieved and shared during this journey. The club wishes him success and the best of luck in the continuation of his professional career.”
