Drivers are being warned of an accident on the M49 this afternoon, which could lead to delays for motorists.

The M49 in Gloucestershire is closed southbound between Junction 22 of the M4 and Junction 19 of the M5.

National Highways reports that the closure is in place for an “emergency recovery operation”, prompting further traffic delays.

The organisation noted that a “heavy goods vehicle loaded with metal poles shifted within the trailer”, making onward travel “unsafe”.

Recovery teams are at the scene working to re-secure the load, with the closure necessary to ensure road users are safe.

Data from National Highways traffic maps suggests that the event will clear by around 2.15pm, although this could be pushed back.

The stretch of road remains closed on the southbound carriageway, while stationary traffic is present on the westbound carriageway.

Emergency services are attending the scene on the M49

The incident appears to have a knock-on effect for other motorists, with slow-moving traffic being seen between J19 and J15 of the M5.

Drivers could see delays between Avonmouth and Almondsbury, heading towards the M5/M4 interchange.

National Highways confirmed that it would provide updates once recovery is complete and the road can be reopened.

Further traffic is seen on the M4 and M5 near Bristol

It added: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”

GB News has contacted the emergency services for a comment.

Traffic maps suggest that the incident will remain on the M49 until at least 2.15pm
