A 72-year-old masseur from the Alnwick area of Northumberland has been charged with 55 sexual offences against 14 women.

Terence McBrien faces a range of serious allegations including attempted rape, multiple counts of sexual assault, and voyeurism.

The septuagenarian is scheduled to appear before Berwick Magistrates’ Court on 19 March.

McBrien has been released on bail ahead of his court date.

The charges represent one of the most significant cases of alleged sexual offending to emerge from the North East of England in recent times, with the accusations spanning more than a dozen alleged victims.

The specific charges against McBrien comprise a single count of attempted rape, seven allegations of sexual assault by penetration, and 34 separate counts of sexual assault by touching.

Additionally, he faces 13 voyeurism charges.

All 55 offences relate to the 14 female complainants.

The case follows what police have described as an extensive and intricate investigation into the alleged crimes.

McBrien remains at liberty on bail whilst awaiting his initial court appearance next month.

The sheer volume of charges has prompted concern among local communities, with detectives acknowledging the potential anxiety such allegations may cause.

Detective Sergeant Michael Rainbow, who is leading the investigation, stated: “Following a complex and lengthy investigation, an individual has now been charged with attempted rape and more than 50 other serious sexual offences.”

He added: “We recognise the nature and number of the charges may raise concern and anxiety within our communities.”

The detective urged anyone with relevant information to contact police, whilst cautioning the public against online or community speculation that could potentially affect the legal proceedings.

Northumbria Police have emphasised that individuals reporting sexual offences are entitled to anonymity and their identities will remain protected throughout any investigation or court process.
