Former Conservative Party Chairman Jake Berry has delivered an insight into the “war room” scenario Sir Keir Starmer faced today.

Speaking on GB News, Mr Berry said Sir Keir will have been delivering a desperate plea to his backbench MPs to convince them he remains the man for the job.

The Prime Minister held a meeting with Labour MPs after getting his Cabinet to deliver public statements reaffirming their commitment.

According to Mr Berry, Sir Keir’s decision to hold showdown talks is a telltale sign of a “dead duck” Prime Minister.

“What I guess it happening, having been there a few times before, there’s a room in Downing Street, often known as the terracotta room, where you effectively set up a war room to bolster the leader”, Mr Berry explained on GB News.

“Everyone in government who is not a civil servant, that will be advisers, members of Parliament, ministers, they will come to that room every day and phone every single Labour MP and ask, ‘what do you want?’, they will try and find a list of what they want.

“You will spend your entire time, all day every day going through the list and it’s an all-encompassing task for the Government to save and prop up the leader.”

Daily Express Columnist Carole Malone asked if there is any point during such talks where it is generally agreed upon that the Prime Minister’s position is effectively untenable.

“The fact you’ve set it up in the first place, you kind of already know it’s over”, Mr Berry explained.

“But you’ve decided to go out standing rather than on your knees.”
