Wigan Athletic say they wish to make a “swift appointment” as their search to replace former head coach Ryan Lowe begins.

The 47-year-old was sacked on Saturday night following the Latics’ 6-1 thrashing by Peterborough United.

The defeat meant Wigan dropped into the League One relegation zone after a seventh loss in their past 10 matches.

In a statement posted on X, external, the club said: “We are very aware of and concerned about our current league position, and our full attention is on improving the situation.

“We believe in this squad of players, and collectively, we know that we are a better team than what our current league position suggests.”

“It was evident that a change of direction is required to affect our recent run of form and league predicament.

“We would like to make a swift appointment to ensure the new Head Coach has the best possible opportunity to make the desired impact between now and the end of the 2025-26 season.”

The statement continued: “It is vital that our new head coach ‘gets’ who we are, and it is a priority that the connection between the supporters and the head coach is built from day one as we head into a new era.”

While the recruitment process continues, the club have decided to postpone a fans’ forum which had been set to take place on Wednesday.

Wigan, meanwhile, also confirmed that first-team coach Mike Garrity, who joined the club as part of Lowe’s backroom staff only last month, has left the club.
