A man wanted on prison recall has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car was driven at police officers, a force has said.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the vehicle was being driven without its lights on and crashed into two police cars while trying to flee on Paynes Road, in Freemantle, Southampton, at about 00:30 GMT.

“It was also driven at officers in the process. Thankfully, none were injured in the incident,” said the force.

The arrested man, aged 45 and from Southampton, was also arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and remains in police custody, it said.

Police said the man was located by officers carrying out inquiries in the area linked to a missing person report.

A 36-year-old woman from Ashford, Surrey, was also arrested at the scene on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking.

She remains in custody while enquiries continue, said Hampshire police.

The force said one police car was damaged to the front, the other to the rear.
