Lloyds Bank is shutting five branches across England this week as part of a sweeping programme that will see 71 locations permanently close their doors throughout 2026.

These closures form part of an ongoing retreat from Britain’s high streets by major lenders.


Last year alone, 218 branches across Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland were shut, according to consumer group Which?

The banking giant attributes these shutdowns to evolving customer behaviour, noting that more than 21 million people now manage their finances through apps and digital platforms rather than visiting physical premises.

This pattern extends well beyond Lloyds. Data from Which? reveals that upwards of 6,600 bank and building society branches have disappeared from British high streets since January 2015.

The branches closing include the Lewes branc, which ceased operations on Monday January 19.

The latest round of shutdowns began on January 19 in Lewes, followed by Swadlincote on January 20.

Branches in Hedge End, Penzance, and Petersfield are all due to close on January 21.

A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson previously stated: “The way people are banking has changed, with over 21 million customers choosing apps to manage their money.”

Other major lenders including Santander, Barclays and NatWest have similarly announced significant reductions to their branch networks.

Customers affected by the closures can still conduct everyday banking at any remaining Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch, as well as through the Post Office network.

Shared banking hubs offer another alternative, providing facilities where customers from various banks can withdraw and deposit funds, settle bills and consult with advisers. As of August last year, 178 such hubs were operating nationwide.

Lloyds also deploys “Community Bankers” at dedicated spaces within these hubs and community venues to assist customers requiring face-to-face support.

Additionally, cash deposits can be made at more than 30,000 PayPoint locations throughout the country.

Consumer advocacy organisations have raised concerns that these widespread closures could leave vulnerable groups behind, particularly elderly people, those with disabilities and individuals lacking digital access.

Rural communities face particular challenges, where alternatives to traditional branches remain limited.

The government-backed Cash Access UK scheme has acknowledged that tens of millions of Britons continue to depend on physical currency for day-to-day spending and household budgeting.

This reliance on cash has prompted questions about whether the country’s transition towards a cashless economy is proceeding too rapidly for those who cannot easily adapt to digital banking methods.

Despite the branch closures, Lloyds is offering existing customers the opportunity to earn up to £250 through its referral programme.

Account holders can generate a link via the mobile banking app to share with friends. When a new customer opens an account using this link, both parties receive £50 as a cash credit within 30 working days.

There is no cap on how many friends can be referred, though the referring customer can only collect a maximum of £250 per calendar year. Under 19s accounts, Smart Start and Student Accounts are excluded from the scheme.
