UK Sport has unveiled an ambitious target of four to eight medals for Team GB at next month’s Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

If achieved, the tally would represent Britain’s best ever performance at a Winter Games.

The funding body announced on Tuesday that approximately 55 British athletes will travel to Italy for the competition, which runs from February 6 to 22.

This goal follows substantial investment of more than £32.5million in Lottery funding distributed across winter sports during the current Olympic cycle.

The upper target of eight medals would significantly surpass Britain’s previous best haul, while even the minimum aim of four would double the Beijing 2022 return.

Among the British contingent, several athletes stand out as genuine gold medal contenders.

Snowboarder Mia Brookes, freestyle skiers Kirsty Muir and Zoe Atkin, curler Bruce Mouat and skeleton racer Matt Weston all possess realistic chances of reaching the top of the podium.

Weston arrives in particularly strong form, a two-time world champion who currently leads the World Cup standings in his discipline.

Brookes, Muir and Atkin carry additional historical significance, as any of them could secure Great Britain’s maiden Olympic gold or silver medal on snow.

This breadth of medal potential across multiple disciplines is unprecedented for a British Winter Olympics squad.

Chef de mission Eve Muirhead, herself a Beijing 2022 curling gold medallist, expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness.

She said: “We’ve been meticulous in our preparations for Milano Cortina 2026.”

She added: “I know first-hand the difference the right environment can make at an Olympic Games, and our focus has been on creating the conditions that allow athletes to deliver when it matters most.

“The potential within this team is exceptionally high, and while we don’t always benefit from the same ease of access to snow and ice as some of our rivals, when I look at the class of 2026, I see a real opportunity to challenge the status quo.

“We are heading to Italy as a credible force across more disciplines than ever before, and I’m excited to see the nation get behind them.”

The target represents a marked improvement on Britain’s showing in Beijing four years ago, where the team returned with just two medals from the Covid-affected Games.

Britain’s current best Winter Olympics medal tally stands at five.

The tally was achieved at Sochi 2014 and subsequently matched at Pyeongchang 2018.

UK Sport attributed the ambitious medal range to British athletes demonstrating greater competitiveness across a wider variety of winter sports than at any previous Games.

Success at the world level since the last Olympics has fuelled optimism among team management, who believe the Italian Games present a genuine opportunity to rewrite the record books.
