The incident happened just outside the stadium on Winwick Road, Warrington, police said

A 17-year-old boy was seriously injured after a fight broke out following a rugby league match, police have said.

The teenager was taken to hospital following the incident, which happened after the Warrington Wolves versus Widnes Vikings match had ended at Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington at 21:23 GMT on Friday.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said “a fight broke out on Winwick Road, leaving one boy seriously injured”.

They said detectives were also investigating disorder during the game. No arrests have been made.

“A number of witnesses have been spoken to and enquiries are continuing,” the spokesperson added.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Cheshire Police.

A spokesperson for the sport’s governing body, the Rugby Football League (RFL) said it was “aware of events that took place at the game”.

They said the RFL “does not condone such behaviour and will speak with both clubs, following which a thorough investigation will be undertaken”.

The has approached both Warrington Wolves and Widnes Vikings for comment.
