Nigel Farage has warned of “genuine security concerns” surrounding Greenland as the Reform UK leader appeared to take aim at Donald Trump’s bid for the territory.
Speaking at a press conference today, Mr Farage said he agrees with Labour that the fate of Greenland must be decided by Greenland and Denmark, not the US.
He said: “There are some genuine security concerns around Greenland and that becomes ever more relevant with a retraction of the ice caps as we head towards the North Pole.
“There is a strong feeling in British intelligence circles, and many in Nato, that there needs to be a significant Nato base located directly on the north of Greenland. At the moment, it would appear that is something Greenland is not particularly keen to do.”
Taking aim at Donald Trump’s threat of using “military action” to obtain Greenland, he added: “Since 2009, Greenland has been moving further and further away from Danish control and is pretty close to establishing its own level of independence and the fear is that they will fall prey to very large amounts of Chinese money and Chinese influence.
“So, as ever, with things that Trump says, they may sound outrageous, and in the case of potentially using force, they are. But there is point behind it.”
Taking issue with the ongoing peace deal negotiations with European leaders, Mr Farage said Britain is in “no position” to put boots on the ground if a peace deal is reached.
He said: “Boots on the ground. What boots, what kit? I mean, we might be able to go for six or eight weeks, but if you’re talking about a modern day reincarnation of the British Army of the Rhine, forget it.

“We are in no position to do it. And despite all the promises that have been made on defence spending, absolutely none of them have happened so far.”
The remarks are not the first time Mr Farage has criticised the peace deal, as the Reform UK leader recently warned the US President that his peace deal for Ukraine is “not acceptable”.
He told The Telegraph: “I don’t think Ukraine being asked to halve the size of their army is acceptable.
“I am waiting to see a counter-proposal from Zelensky’s government.”

Mr Trump’s 28-point peace plan is putting pressure on Kyiv to officially hand over the Russian-occupied territories of Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk.
The proposed ceasefire would also free Moscow from most sanctions and allow Russia to rejoin the G7, restoring the economic forum to eight members for the first time since 2014.
The Reform leader has also criticised his long-term ally Mr Trump for his recent actions in Venezuela, which saw him remove former President Nicolas Maduro and transport him to court in New York on charges of “narco-terrorism”.
Taking to social media, Mr Farage told his followers on X: “‘The American actions in Venezuela overnight are unorthodox and contrary to international law — but if they make China and Russia think twice, it may be a good thing.

“I hope the Venezuelan people can now turn a new leaf without Maduro.”
Mr Trump described the operation to capture Maduro as “brilliant tactically”, but admitted “many” were killed in the action.
He said: “We had a lot of boots on the ground, but it was amazing. And think of it, nobody was killed.
“And on the other side, a lot of people were killed. Unfortunately, I say that, soldiers, Cubans, mostly Cubans, but many, many killed.”
