Homebuyers across the UK could benefit from zero home energy costs for a decade under a groundbreaking initiative announced today.

Octopus Energy, has partnered with Barratt Redrow, to construct properties equipped with advanced green technology that eliminates household energy bills entirely.

The collaboration will see 54 homes built across sites in Wixams and Tewkesbury, with each property featuring solar panels, battery storage systems and heat pumps as standard.

The agreement brings together Octopus’s pioneering Zero Bills tariff with Barratt Redrow’s extensive building expertise to deliver sustainable housing where occupants will not spend a single penny on domestic energy for 10 years.

These 54 properties at new developments in Bedfordshire and Gloucestershire represent the initial phase of the partnership, with both companies already investigating opportunities for further Zero Bills developments elsewhere in Britain.

The deal marks a significant step forward for energy-efficient housing, combining the resources of the nation’s leading energy provider with its foremost residential construction firm.

Octopus Energy introduced the Zero Bills tariff in 2022, creating what it describes as the world’s first energy deal guaranteeing customers no home energy costs for between five and 10 years.

Properties on the scheme come fitted with cutting-edge sustainable technology including heat pumps, battery storage and rooftop solar panels.

Construction on the initial Wixams and Tewkesbury homes is expected to finish in 2026.

Both Octopus and Barratt Redrow are already scouting additional locations across the UK for potential future Zero Bills developments.

Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Director at Octopus Energy, said: “We’ve been working closely with Barratt Redrow on their research trials and we are now able to showcase what can be achieved with Zero Bills at scale in new housing developments.

Oliver Novakovic, Technical & Innovation Director at Barratt Redrow, said: “Our partnership with Octopus marks our continued research into low and zero-bill living for our customers.”

Novakovic added that the initiative demonstrates how housebuilding innovation and energy technology can combine to create homes that are both environmentally friendly and financially accessible over the long term.

Octopus Energy has set an ambitious target of delivering 100,000 Zero Bills homes by 2030, having already expanded the programme to Germany, France and New Zealand alongside its UK operations.

The company has approved more than 5,000 Zero Bills properties through various developer partnerships, spanning affordable housing, private rentals and shared ownership schemes.

This latest announcement follows Octopus Capital’s recent £100m fundraising through its Affordable Housing Fund, which will enable over 1,000 additional Zero Bills homes across England and Scotland.
