Drivers have been warned to expect hours of delays this morning following a major road collision on the M25 motorway.

The incident, which occurred this morning, involved two cars and two Heavy Goods Vehicles which collided along the motorway, blocking the lanes.

It has now caused several lanes to close along the M25 in Hertfordshire, anti-clockwise between J27 (Epping) and J25 (Waltham Cross).

Police are currently in attendance and are being assisted by National Highways Traffic Officers, who are helping manage traffic.

A recovery crew is also on its way to remove the damaged HGV, which is stranded between two lanes, the agency explained.

National Highways warned drivers that it expects the delays to last for more than two hours, with the agency urging drivers to “re-route or even delay your journey”.

According to the latest information, normal traffic conditions are expected to return between 1pm and 1.15pm later today.

Updating drivers, National Highways shared: “Two lanes (of four) remain closed on the M25 anti-clockwise in the Holmesdale Tunnel between J26 (Waltham Abbey) and J25 (Waltham Cross) due to a collision.

“Recovery crews are en route. There are currently two-hour delays. Please allow extra time or consider other routes.”

National Highways explained that recovery following the road collision “is going well”, but there is also an oil spillage which requires treatment, with drivers urged to allow extra time.

The M25 spans more than 117 miles in length, beginning at the Dartford Crossing, and flows past a total of 33 junctions.

It also links to several motorways, including the M1, M4, A1, and M40, making it a big part of the major road network in the UK.

The RAC shared: “The M25 is one of the busiest roads in the UK with hundreds of thousands of users travelling on it every day. When joining the M25, you may want to be mindful of accident blackspots. Plan your journey with the RAC Route Planner and keep up to date with any major M25 traffic updates.”
